Is There a Dr. in the House?

Here it is. My self-dilating pupil. It's been happening for years, but in the past few weeks it happens several times a day. Most doctors shrug, ask me if I'm on drugs, then refer me to someone else. Let's hear it - what do you think I have?

Hi Melissa
Since you aren't on drugs (meth is the most common cause of both eyes being dilated) you may have Adie's syndrome, a condition in which one pupil contracts more slowly than the other in response to light. It's usually caused either by a malfunction in the mechanism that controls the dilation reflex or from a harmless inflammation of the eye nerves. Try going from a dark room to a very light room and see what happens. Hope all is well. Love Dad

That's a cool trick.

Personally i would call it... A lazy eye... But Anyways, it could have something to do with what dad said. maybe instead of light, it could be a focusing problem. Maybe while staring at far away objects your eyes dilate then go to looking focusing on something close. it could also explain your lack of depth perception.

I have to laugh, Helen - Rob and I were JUST talking about how this picture makes me look like a psychopath that is just about to snap. I have come to the conclusion that I need to walk around with a perma-smile, so I don't look like a female Ted Kaczynski.

I will have to quote the classic movie, Kindergarten Cop, on this one and say, "It's a tumor!"

Ya, that's kinda weird...cool but weird. Good luck figuring it out.

I agree with your dad. It sounds like you have Adie's Syndrome. Other symptoms include diaphoresis (excessive sweating), and loss of deep tendon reflexes (have Rob whack your knee to see if it jerks). Although from what I know, Adie's is a permanent dilation, not on and off... but I'm no doctor.

I'll ask the two optometrists I work for today about it.

You're not a psychopath, per se..............
