What is wrong with me? It's 11:30pm, I've wanted to go to bed since 9:30, have been IN bed playing on my phone since 10:30 - but just couldn't seem to sleep. Something was missing. Finally it hit me, I FORGOT TO BLOG! Any normal person would just not worry about it and go to bed...especially since I don't even have anything important to say. Is it dumb when blogging becomes a habit rather than a hobby? Perhaps I should rethink my blog a day goal. It was in June that decided to blog daily for a month for the single purpose of getting pictures taken by my sister in law, Jessica. When did it snowball into this? Surely Jessica would have taken our pictures anyway...she's just so good like that!

On another note, one of my dearest friends and his wife - who has also become one of my dearest friends just announced tht they are moving to Florida. I just finally got Stefanie back from Florida...and now they are going. Is there something going on down there that nobody is telling me about? I'm feeling all sorts of left out. Oh great, now I'm flashing back to high school...my braces are back on, ...but none of the cool kids have to ride the bus..., why are all of my friends in love with my brother?

Now look what you've done, stupid Florida.

BDEM: Remembering that I am NOT in high school, and that I never, ever have to go back. (It was either that or folding laundry...yeah, it was a slow day!)

Feels Like Fall

We try to hit up Cascade Springs every year as the leaves start to change - ironically, this year when we came back and downloaded our pictures, we discovered that we went on the exact same date last year.  (Thank you iPhoto for keeping our photos dated!) The air was crisp, the leaves were bursting with color, and there wasn't a single meltdown - my kind of outing!

BDEM:  My mom and her husband, David, are in town!  So we had family dinner at my mom's favorite Mexican restaurant.  I'm not sure how, but I think my mom gets prettier by the year. Lucky, lucky lady!  I'll try to post some pictures of our adventures while she is here  - because I'm sure most of my BDEMS will involve her for the next week!

If You're Happy and You Know It...

Make This Face:
Oh, how I love that cheesy grin.

Yes...it IS a grin....kind of.

It's a happy face of some sort, I mean - she only seems to make it when she's in a good mood.

Who am I kidding? I have no idea what this face means, but I still love it.

BDEM:  Rob and a walked around IKEA today - after dropping the little ones in their FREE daycare.  Shouldn't all stores offer free daycare?  It sure makes me want to shop there more often.  The craziest thing about this daycare is that it even offers a punch card.  Get this:  after you drop your kids off to be watched (FOR FREE) on ten separate occasions, you get a free gift.  I feel guilty getting it stamped - like at ten punches I need to show up with a gift for them.  "Hi, we're IKEA.  Thanks for using us as free babysitting ten times.  Please take this cake so you know how much we appreciate you letting us serve you."  There has GOT to be some sort of glitch in the system.  As we picked up the kids, the daycare ended with, "Oh, and it's Tuesday - so all kids get a free lunch upstairs. Come see us again, soon!"

The Hike

Since I don't have any pictures to document the ultimate nacho showdown, I'll post some pictures about the healthy hike my hubby and kids went on.  My initial reaction of trying to take four kids is going to suck like nobody's business perhaps Ella and Claire are too young, was definitely on the money.  I love to hike, but hate when the experience turns to tired kids that want to be carried (Ella can't spend twenty minutes walking through Costco without complaining) and since this hike ended up taking them over five hours, I'm really REALLY glad I stayed home.  Even happier I ate all the nachos.  Yes, still.

Even though they got a bit lost and had to hitchhike (don't get me started) they all seemed to have a great time.  You can enjoy the experience the same way I did - in retrospect.

They took the chairlift up  - looks like Jude enjoyed himself

Maddie was a little bit more apprehensive, but survived

They sat on trees

Misused hiking sticks

Picked plenty of Stinging Nettle

Saw about a million of these

And finally arrived

My nature-loving husband

Lost - but happy
Despite it being, "The longest hike EVER," the kids both said they would definitely go on a shorter hike again.   Such troopers.

BDEM: After taking a Sunday to recover from the outdoors, the family hit up one of our favorite spots to enjoy the fall - Cascade Springs.  So prepare yourself - more nature pics coming tomorrow!

Lazy Sunday

Today was:

Pre-church meetings
Delicious boxed lunch from Apple Spice Junction that a neighbor brought by yesterday
Church
Pizza on the grill
Visit from church friends
Kids in bed
Visit from Rob's parents
Google useless information
Blog from bed

Not a whole lot happening from these parts. Perhaps tomorrow I'll have more to post on. But then again, I have a whole new fall list which might distract me. It includes:

The Office
30 Rock
House
Modern Family

Any I'm totally missing out on?

BDEM: After my pre-church meetings, I came home and all of the kids decided to hide in the coat closet and surprise me. Well, apparently that closet was much more exciting than they originally thought, because I opened the door, and all the kids kept playing. They stayed in there for over a half an hour while Rob and I shared a lunch date at the kitchen table. I know there's a huge joke in here...but I'm going to ignore it, and just relish in the fact that all of my kids stayed in the closet. Not a word, people. Not a word.

Oh, Dear...

Rob has been planning on taking the kids hiking for weeks - and today he and the two older kids finally ventured out.  I decided it would be best if I stayed home with Ella and Claire so the three of them could actually enjoy themselves (a.k.a. Rob only has to listen to two whining kids at the half-way point rather than three and a crying baby).  With both little kids napping, a quiet and clean house, I decided to grab a snack and watch a show I had on the DVR.  Something inside of me (hormones) told me I needed some junk food, so I pulled out some tortilla chips and a diet pepsi. Mmm, not QUITE what I wanted, so I returned to the kitchen to add some cheese.  Yessssss....NACHOS!  When was the last time I nuked chips and cheese?  It's been ages.  I couldn't quite remember what a normal serving size of nachos would be, so I basically filled the plate.  I then sat down and ate all of the nachos.  In the world.  I must have been making a plate for a giant, because I'm pretty sure no normal person in their right mind eats that many nachos and lives to tell about it.  It wasn't five minutes after I finished all three thousand chips that my stomach decided to turn on me.  I have obviously initiated war, and am not sure I'll survive the next round.  For all of you out there, I just want to let you know that death by nacho is a noble, noble cause.  Please think of me whenever you tell the "Nah-Cho Cheese" joke, and never cease to remind my husband that this is all his fault.  He never should have left me and the chips alone in the same house.  He knows better than that.

I think I am going to attempt mowing the lawn.  That way, if I do suffer a heart attack, it will appear as though it was from over exertion rather than from cheese clogging every artery in my body.  Death by mowing-lawn-for-husband.  Oh, that is priceless.

BDEM:  Granted it's only halfway through the day - but I have to say it...definitely eating the nachos.  The hours that follow may change my mind, but for now - with the taste of tortilla chips and cheese still on my lips - mmmmm, the nachos.  Definitely the nachos.

Happiness Is...

Watching {quite possibly} the chubbiest baby on the planet sit in only a diaper.  Talk about roll-overload.

BDEM:  Watching my husband's face in the mirror as he tried his best to cut the back of my hair.  I'm slowly growing an unintentional {so, NOT cool} mullet - and to save a few bucks, my sweet hubby said he'd take the scissors to it.  In that moment he was focused, artistic, and flat out hilarious.  Thanks, babe!  I owe you one hair cut! I would highly suggest never taking me up on it.

An Apology

I have this friend....and I really like her.  I hope she likes me, but truthfully, if I were her, I probably wouldn't like me.  We have been neighbors for five years, we go to the same church, yet every single time I see her - I call her Jamie. Which, by the way, is not her name.  Her name is STACY.  She's one of those girls who is just so darned cute and crafty and funny that I can't seem to understand why I get her name wrong every SINGLE time!  There are those people whose names you try not to say because you're not sure of them...so you kind of avoid the name part of the conversation - are you following?  The ones who you always refer to as YOU...

"How are YOU?"

"What have YOU been up to?"

She's not one of those at all - I very casually and blatantly call her the wrong name.

"Hey JAMIE!  What's up?!  Oh, crap - your name is NOT JAMIE!  What is WRONG WITH ME?!"

This is always how our conversations start, and I hate myself for it.  I genuinely adore her, enjoy spending time with her, and want to see her more often.

Just today, I ran into her at the store - called her Jamie - apologized my guts out, then told my kids to say goodbye to Jamie. That's not a joke.

I am a horrible, horrible person - but Jamie, ah dang it--- I mean Stacy, I hope you'll still be my friend even though I am a huge flake.

BDEM:  Today I played basketball - okay, H.O.R.S.E. against my friend Sara.  I haven't played since, oh - maybe fifth grade (Until Tim Szatko broke the family hoop and casually said, "I think I have to go home now." ....remember that, family?!) Anyway - it was a blast.  I love being terrible at basketball.

Sleepless

Last night, while all the world was asleep - and my body was apparently on speed - I wondered what a normal night was like for most people.  I'd ask my husband, but I've seen how he sleeps...and there doesn't seem to be ANYTHING peaceful about that.  He dreams about large insects, dinosaurs, and being chased my people that cast spells on him.  He talks, swats, and does the just-dozed-off jump/startle almost every single night.  Needless to say, I don't consider him to be an ideal candidate to answer my question.

Where was I?  Not sleeping....Rob's a psycho sleeper....OH!  Yes.  So, last night while you were all in dreamland - I was wondering what it's like to sleep the entire night through.  Is that the norm?  I realize I am probably more on the extreme end of sleepless nights (not quite insomniac - but definitely on the border somewhere) but do most of you go to sleep, fall asleep quickly, and then wake up in the morning feeling bright eyed and bushy tailed?  OR - as I like to believe, do you all wake up at least two to three times - check the clock, hit the potty, roll around for a few and then go back to bed?

Are any of you out there making the list?  Panicking over the ridiculous things that somehow - in the daytime - aren't anywhere near as important?  I am so curious as to what a typical night holds for all of my friends.  Do you have lots of dreams?  Do you remember them?

Please share.

BDEM:  Today my friend, Maria, and I weeded the yard of a lady from our church who is about to have a baby.  It was so wonderful to sit and chat with her about all of the different trials that mothers face.  It always seems like everyone else has it all together, when truth be told - our problems - no matter what they are - are just as burdensome as everyone else's.  We are all going through similar experiences: the joys, the heartaches, the exciting days, the days that never end - and when it's all said and done, the only thing that matters is that we did OUR best.  Not the best according to other peoples' standards - but the best for our individual families.  It was one of those chats that you walk away from thinking, "Wow - the grass really does always seem greener.."  Good reminder.  Good BDEM.

Another Gem

Jude wanted to play something today - but didn't have the action figures that he needed.  And everybody knows that doesn't stop my little Buzz.  Impressive, no?

There's even a little pocket on Eve's tummy where the plant inside the boot {directive} goes.  I think my favorite part is the fact that he remembered the cockroach {who incidentally, I believed - up until today when Rob corrected me, was a cricket.  Oh the things your stay-at-home husband can teach you!}

BDEM:  Tonight while finishing up dinner, two girls (from the youth I work with at my church) showed up at my door and said, "We're just going around giving random acts of kindness.  Is there anything we can do for you?"  Really.  How often does help just SHOW UP at your house?!  I looked around, and asked if they would take all of my kids for a walk while I did the dishes.  The kids were thrilled, I was thrilled, and these girls were honestly excited to be helping my family.  BDEM fo-sho!

THREE CHEERS FOR DAN AND MARISSA!!!

One of my handsome brothers (Dan to be exact) wanted to brighten our week, so he had our favorite hotdogs shipped from Chicago.  HEAVEN!  Thanks Dan and Marissa for the delicious dinner - they were amazing!

BDEM:  Rob and I watched the movie October Sky.  Very few people will understand WHY I loved this movie, but I did.  Dad, Greg....(sigh)  I have so many great memories of letting the two of you make rockets that I then signed my name on.

Hanging in There

That seems to be the answer I keep giving. I get asked about twenty times per day how we are doing, and I've pretty much exhausted all other answers. So for anyone out there wondering how and what we are doing....we are putting in a lot of resumes, talking to a lot of people, and just hanging in there. It's really all we can do. I still have days (like today) where I swallow back the tears at the mere mention, but in general, I'm feeling much better. I have my husband, I have my children, and no matter where we end up...we will be together.

I really don't want to post much more about it, because it's kind of a downer on a blog that I really try to keep positive, but I know a lot of you are wondering. I appreciate your thoughts, your prayers and all the sweet messages you send me. I am so blessed to know each and every one of you.

BDEM: There has been this cake on my "to bake" list for a couple of years now, and today I finally made it. It looked great, and in my humble opinion, tasted pretty darn good too! Totally worth all of the build up it received over the years. Oh man....how I love cake. One of my all time weaknesses, right behind donuts and cookies. I kind of love those too. I'm giving all of those up again tomorrow, though....really. No, really I am. It's the healthier choice...and it's good for me. Yes, indeed. Totally giving them up. Really, really, really.

Hmmm

Have you ever been a part of a produce club?  The kind where you pay like $15, and then get ridiculous amounts of fresh fruit and veggies?  We've been on board with the concept for a while now, and really are pretty happy with the bounty we have received.  Saves us a lot on produce, and we get to associate with those greener (and obviously better) than us.  They are a fun little hippie community...lots of canvas bags and Birkenstocks.  I digress.  Anyway, the only down side to it is the fact that you don't choose your produce.  You just try to use whatever the good earth gives you.

This is all fine and dandy, and helps me to be more creative in my cooking and preparing - until you get these:

Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?

What are these, and what do I do with them?!  I'll give you two clues:  Rob says it's more like a fruit, and apparently has lots of seeds.

You get extra karma points if you have a recipe to put them in.  And can't we all use a few karma points?

BDEM:  This BDEM is only a retrospect BDEM.  At the time I was suicidal, but I think that starting Insanity again was a good choice - it made the rest of the day better.  Exercise is definitely a mood enhancer.

Ridiculously Cute

....as in, I think she is...

BDEM:  Today was day two of the ultimate clean-out.  I attacked the front closet, the medicine/linen closet and all of the bathroom cabinets.  Thus far I have removed seven large trash bags full of junk from my house.  Left on the list is the laundry room and Claire's closet.  Slowly but surely this house will be clean!

Added question.  Have you ever seen the movie Spy Kids?  It's playing in the background right now.  I'm sorry, but is this the worst movie EVER?  Sadly I think my husband may be more into it than the kids.  I take the worst movie ever comment back.  I forgot about Shark boy and Lava (llama as my niece calls it) Girl.
